How to Avoid (or Minimize) I-405 Traffic

The I-405 is Los Angeles's most notorious freeway. If you can't avoid it entirely, you can minimize the pain by understanding timing, knowing alternatives, and checking live cameras before you go.

Strategy 1: Timing is Your Biggest Lever

If you have any schedule flexibility: Leave before 6:30 AM, wait until 10 AM, or drive after 8 PM. Avoid 4–7 PM — this is the worst southbound window for the Sepulveda Pass.

Strategy 2: Check Cameras Before Committing

Look at I-405 cameras before deciding to take it. If you see heavy brake lights at the Sepulveda Pass, consider an alternative or delay.

Strategy 3: Know Your Alternatives

Sepulveda Boulevard: Much slower, but when the 405 is stopped, Sepulveda is moving. Sometimes a wash time-wise, but lower stress.
